RUG 3: HIDDEN

You come here,
to this new place,
and just as your possessions
were forcibly taken,
so you forcibly take the knowledge
from your children
You hide it underneath new Persian rugs
Sweep it behind fresh cabinets
These new heirlooms
They have no memory
No sense of history
Because history is painful
We are American,
dad shouts from the kitchen table.
Call us Elliot,
Elia has passed away.
